3. Antioxidants

The heart and blood vessels are especially susceptible to oxidant attacks. A balance between free radicals (a molecule with a non- paired electron) and antioxidants is necessary to maintain health and prevent diseases such as immune dysfunction and carcino-genesis which have been associated with an elevated level of free radicals relative to antioxidants. The electron imbalance makes the free radicals reactive which can cause chemical and biological damage.
